Bergen harbour in the old times...

Here we have two postcards that shows the harbour in Bergen from two different sides. The first one is from the “Fishmarket” which was more popular in the older times than it’s today. In the old days fishermen sold their fish from the boats, which the postcard shows. Today its boats in the inner harbour too, but its more cabincruiser’s and leisure boats.

The second card shows some of the harbour from the seaside, and this painting is from much older times than the first postcard. In the background you see two of Bergen’s mountains “Fløyen” and “Ulriken” which is very popular recreation areas for the people in Bergen and the tourists that visit the city. The harbour was and is very important for trade and visiting cruise ships.

Englands charm...

Todays postcards are also from England. Should I move to another country it has to be England, and these two cards shows why… Where these two cottages are located its not indicated on the cards, but it can be anywhere in the countryside of England. These types of houses you can see everywhere in England and that’s what make this island so charming. Its only one fault with England – and that the cars has to drive on the WRONG side of the road

Oxford and Cambridge

Today I’ll take the the trip over the NorthSea to England. These two postcards of Cambridge and Oxford is replicas of advertisingcards that shows some of the beauty of England. These two cities has the most famous universities in the world, and amongst many known people who has attended is Bill Clinton who did go to a university in Oxford in his younger days.

I have been to Cambridge ones, but Oxford many times. London is the number 1 city in England but Oxford is a very good number 2. If you have seen “Inspector Morse” on TV you have seen the beauty of the city and the surroundings. If you are going to England you MUST visit Oxford, you will fall in love right away…

Welcome from Askøy - and Bergen..

This will be my first blog in English, if you spot some language error – feel free to comment that. Over to the postcards which today will be from Askøy and Bergen. The first one from Askøy shows different part of this beautiful island I live on. It’s one of the biggest growing community in Norway (nearly 24000 inhabitants), and they think it will raise to 40000 in the future. Then much of the nice nature will be gone…

Bergen the second largest city in Norway (250000 inhabitants) is surrounded by 7 mountains (!), and this postcard shows the “railway” up to the most visited one Fløyen. From there you have the most spectacular view of the city and the surroundings amongst them Askøy. I remember in the days when I was young and fit, I did walk up to the top and back downhill – those were the days…..

Jeg har fått tilbakemeldinger fra mange engelsktalende lesere, derfor har jeg bestemt meg for å skrive bloggen videre bare på engelsk. Jeg håper alle norske har forståelse for dette og at de vil fortsette å komme tilbake - for postkort blir det gjennomgående tema fremdeles.

On the road..og "Greyhound"

Denne gangen har jeg bare ett postkort å vise og det er av en buss. Det er en spesiell historie bak, som egentlig skjedde i 1978 - og ender i dag. Dette året (1978) var jeg og noen venner på en tur til USA, der vi reiste rundt i buss – med busselskapet ”Greyhound”. Først fløy vi til New York fra London med et nystartet flyselskap med navnet ”Laker Airways” – det første lavprisselskap i verden. Senere kom Ryan og Easy Jet og flere andre, men det er annen historie.

Som sagt reiste vi med buss i USA fra New York til St.Louis, New Orleans, Tulsa, Miami og endte opp i St.Petersburg, der vi besøkte en norsk slektning av meg. Å reise med ”Greyhound buss” var en livsstil i USA den gangen, og vi elsket det. Over til i dag: på internett leste jeg om en bok som het ”On the road” skrevet av Jack Kerouac som skal handle om å reise i USA på 1950 tallet.. Den handler også om opplevelsen av jazz på 1950 tallet. Den har jeg nå bestilt og gleder meg stort til å lese Slik kan en busstur i 1978 og en en reise på 1950 tallet inspirere hverandre og konklusjonen vet jeg når jeg har lest boken. Følg med følg med….!

Today I read on the internet about a book (“On the road” by Jack Kerouac) that I did order right away because it sounded interesting. And I remembered a trip I did in 1978 in USA –on the road, by “Greyhound bus”.The book is about USA on the 1950’s, about being young loving jazz and being on the road. I’m looking forward to reading the book, and when I have you will get the conclusion of my bustravel and Kerouac’s travel. Stay tuned..!
